Everyone loves to camp, because it brings us closer to nature. Camping, fishing and other outdoor activities give you plenty of time outside, and after a day outdoors few things feel better than a shower under the open sky.
An onsite shower often is not possible at a campsite, a cabin or a backyard pool. That is where a solar shower or a portable outdoor shower comes in. A solar shower heats the water with sunlight, which is free, eco-friendly and available almost everywhere, while a battery-powered shower pump gives you real pressure from any bucket of water. Below we compare eight outdoor showers, three solar bags, three battery-powered showers, a permanent backyard shower and a privacy tent, followed by a short guide on how to choose.

How a Solar Shower Works
A typical solar shower is a lightweight bag that you fill with water and leave in the sun. Its dark side absorbs sunlight and heats the water, and some bags have a clear side that traps additional heat. Capacities range from about 2 to 5 gallons, enough for one to several showers. Many bags add a hose and a nozzle, and the better ones include a thermometer so that you know when the water is ready.
What to Look for in an Outdoor Shower
- Construction. Look for a bag with double-welded seams or multi-layer construction that can stand up to weight. Leaks are the most common problem.
- Handle. A strong handle matters because it carries the whole weight of the bag when it is hung. Avoid bags that rely on a short bar.
- Sprayer. Sprayers turn on and off with a screw, a push button or a lever. Screw-type sprayers are hard to use with soapy hands, and some lever nozzles can start to leak over time.
- Capacity. Two gallons is enough for one person, but families benefit from 5 gallons or more. Avoid overfilling the bag. Bigger bags also take longer to heat.
- Temperature. Premium bags have a built-in gauge. Without one, you can feel the outside of the bag with your hand and soon learn how it relates to the water inside.
- Power source. If you need pressure or have no sun, choose a rechargeable pump, and remember that you will need to supply warm water yourself.
