Best Tankless Water Heaters Features

It never hurts to know one or two technical specs of a product you are soon going to invest in. First and foremost, it is desirable to understand the features that come bundled along an instantaneous water heater; whether gas, electrical, indoor or outdoor variant. The knowledge of these techs of the tankless water heating systems couple with your requirements, will help you decide whether you should purchase an electrical version or go for the gas variant.

Afterwards, you need to decide whether you would like the unit to be installed indoors or outdoors. Following list contains all the main technical specifications of a tankless water heater which you should heed carefully:

• Activation Flow Rate
Minimum flow rate a.k.a. activation flow rate of an instantaneous water heater is the least amount of water flow required by the heating system to ensure you get a hot water after turning on the knob of your shower. Some cheap units have activation flow rate as high as 1 GPM (gallon-per-minute) which can sore your luxurious bath. Therefore, it is essential to check for this spec before you decide to purchase a product. Simply, look for low activation flow rate while buying one of these equipment.

• Build Quality
The best way to invest money is to pay for skilled workmanship instead of saving a few bucks on the purchase of a cheap unit. The build quality of a product can be known by reading product reviews found on the Internet. Even if the product comes with a substantial warranty, a malfunctioning unit can cause you the inconvenience of not using it at your will coupled with the headache of reaching-out to the service for finding a solution. Therefore, it is necessary to check the build quality of a product before making your mind and go for the purchase.

• Condensing Water Heaters
Compared to a non-condensing tankless water heater which usually have an average energy factor of 0.82, a condensing variant can have an average energy factor of 0.95. Though condensing units are more costly, they are worth the cost. In addition to being efficient, condensing units have a better build quality. Condensing continuous flow water heaters uses the heat of the flue gas, a mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and water vapour produced as a result of the burning of natural gas or propane, as a secondary heat source and hence have a better average energy factor than non-condensing units.

• Energy Factor
Energy factor of a continuous flow water heater actually provides an approx. insight about the efficiency of the unit regarding the utilisation of heat source. For example, if a gas unit has an energy factor of 0.8 and gas consumption input of 10,000 BTU then the actual heating power of the unit will be 8,000 BTU. Such water heating system can provide an 80°F rise in temperature when water is running through it with a 2 GPM flow rate. In short, the more the energy factor the less the wastage of energy.

• Heating Power
Approximately 500 BTU per hour is enough to raise the temperature by 1°F of water flowing at 1 GPM. The fact is based upon that 1 BTU (British Thermal Unit) is equivalent to 1055 Joules. Suppose you have to raise your water temperature by 70°F at a 2 GPM flow rate, then you require 1000 BTUs to rise the temperature of water by 1°F. So, you’ll require 70,000 BTUs for the complete job.

Note:The BTU spec of a product isn’t its actual heating capacity. For that, you’ll need to apply the energy factor. However, heating power can you give you some rough idea about the heating efficiency of the unit.

• Maximum Flow Rate
Measured in GPM (gallons-per-minute), maximum flow rate gives you the knowledge of quantity of water allowed to pass through the water heater at an instant. A typical gas tankless water heater can have the maximum flow rate anywhere between 6 GPM and 10 GPM. You can estimate your required water flow based on the number of water fixtures that’ll be used simultaneously provided your best shower head or best shower faucet has a flow rate of no more than 2 GPM and make sure your shower drains will be able to handle it.

Best Tankless Water Heaters Advantages

So that we have now the features of a continuous flow water heater covered, let’s move on to know the pros offered by these units. Following list contains a number of advantages that are tagged to tankless water heaters:

• Compact Size
Tankless water heaters are compact units. Instead of installing them at somewhere distant from their location of use they can be installed at the location that they need to serve. As they don’t require water tanks, the save space and only requires some space for themselves only.

• Energy efficient
Tankless water heaters can be costlier than your average water heaters. However, they have a way too great energy efficiency factor than conventional water heaters. A typical storage water heater requires a water tank to store the heated water. The loss of energy results as the water being stored in the tank is not being used. Comparatively, continuous flow water heaters are used only when the water is required hence no loss of stored water heat. Also, these units draw less power than standard water heaters and hence, saves you a lot of energy.

• Reduced Risk of Damage
Water tanks are prone to several damages ranging from rupture to overflow. Therefore, no standing water tank, no risk of damage and you can easily use the on-demand water heater anytime at your service.

• Unlimited Hot Water Supply
Probably, the biggest advantage of tankless water heaters is their ability to provide an unlimited hot water supply. While you can run out of hot water stored in the tank of a conventional water heater, you don’t have to worry about running-out of water supply in a on-demand water heater as you can get as much hot water as required provided the water flow continues.

Best Tankless Water Heaters Issues

Though there are several convincing benefits of using a tankless water heater, there are some issues with these units which you need to acknowledge and adjust with before you get yourself one of these heating systems. These are mentioned as follows:

• Heat Source
Tankless water heaters either operate on electricity or gas. Therefore, less traditional systems such as solar water heating systems aren’t compatible with tankless water systems.

• High Start-up Cost
An average storage water heater costs about a fraction of the price of a tankless water heating system. In addition, tankless water heating systems might require additional costs of electricity and gas system installation. Though being such costly they can on-the-run prove to be better options than conventional water heating systems with storage.

• Minimum Temperature
A typical on-demand water heater have a minimum flow requirement. This is the minimum or say, desirable water flow which the system needs in order to start warming up the water required. The less the flow, the warmer the water. Therefore, it might require you some practice to get the desirable temperature water from the tankless water heating systems.

Best Tankless Water Heaters Water Flow

With tankless water heating systems you don’t have to worry about the hot water capacity as these units provide hot water until the water is running in your plumbing. Simply, the issue you need to bother about with such systems is the flow and not the water capacity. An on-demand water heater only runs out of hot water if the water flow increases over its limit to heat water after a maximum flow.

You can use such water heating system to fill an oversized tub but can’t expect a sufficient hot water supply for two bathrooms and a washing machine running. For that, you can only expect a lukewarm supply of water. Always remember to consider the maximum flow rate of such systems when using for heating water. Once the flow surpasses the maximum flow rate it can deliver, don’t expect hot water as it is not in the capacity of the water heating system to provide you with.

Tankless Water Heater Types

Depending on the context of usage and location, several types of tankless water heaters are available. Before making a purchase you should make sure about the requirement that you may want the heating system to fulfil. Though most of these systems come for indoor use, some of these are designed for outdoor installation hence eliminating venting requirements but only where the cold climate is not an issue.

Gas-fired tankless water heating systems require proper ventilation to expel out the waste gases formed during the process. Most of the gas heaters can have efficiencies as much as 80-85 percent. Electric variants, on the other hand, can help you cut down electricity bills over long-term use. Following are the most common types of tankless water heating systems:

Electric on-demand water heaters are ideal for indoor as well as outdoor use and ranges from single to multi-bathroom use.

Gas Tankless Water Heater

Best Gas tankless water heaters require either natural gas or propane to heat up the water. In the heating process, several unwanted gases like carbon dioxide are formed which needs to be expelled out of the environment. Therefore, gas variants of such heating systems require proper venting.

You can either vent on a wall or penetrate your roof for providing ventilation facility to the equipment. Gas heaters have a high initial cost but can be as much as 80-85 percent efficient. Therefore, gas tankless water heaters ideal for locations with no venting issues.

Portable Tankless Water Heater

Portable tankless water heaters can be used indoor as well as outdoors. These heaters come with a compact and sleek design which enables them to be installed anywhere with a reduced amount of installation labor. Most of these products come with separate warranties on the heat exchanger and other parts of the equipment.

If you’re looking for a tankless water heating system installable in a tight space, then a ‘sealed combustion’ unit with compact size will be the perfect choice for you.

Tankless Water Heater Warranties

Though they may range from small and mid-sized equipment to full-sized heating systems, they still consume less space when compared with conventional storage heating systems which requires tremendous amount of space for installing the storage tank. You can easily use tankless water heaters for indoor as well as for outdoor use (only in some cases though). Our water heater purchased nearly three years ago has been working very satisfactorily until on 20 December it started to give problems. The water was hot for about 30 seconds then went cold.

Our main problem was trying to contact Rinnai. All their phone numbers were not answering including the emergency no. for faults. They appear to have shut down all services till early January.

This is appalling service. They should at least have a hotline for answering emergency calls.

I'm sorry to hear about such a poor customer experience with Rinnai. I would think they are more professional then this.
