Why Do Glass Shower Doors Develop Stains?
The spots and stains on shower glass are mainly caused by two culprits: hard water and soap. Hard water is full of calcium and magnesium carbonates. When these meet traditional soap, they form soap scum. As well as being unsightly, soap scum can seep into the pores of the glass and, if left, can eventually corrode it.
Mildew is another problem. It forms when fungal growth creates a thin coating on the glass, and the humidity of a bathroom is the perfect environment. You may need a cleaner with hydrogen peroxide or chlorine to disinfect the glass and keep mold and mildew at bay.
Tips for Keeping Shower Glass Clear
- Wipe it down. A quick squeegee after each shower removes most of the water before it can dry and leave minerals behind.
- Clean on a schedule. Use a daily or weekly spray to prevent buildup, and a stronger stain remover only when needed.
- Use the right tools. Soft cloths and non-scratch pads are safest. Some acid-based cleaners and abrasives can scratch or etch glass, and etching is permanent, so test any new product on a small, hidden corner first.
- Protect the glass. After a deep clean, apply a water repellent such as Rain-X to keep water from sticking.
- Ventilate. A good exhaust fan helps to dry the room faster. See our bathroom exhaust fan reviews.
