In every bathroom there is at least one piece of furniture that provides storage, and when you are redoing the bathroom or replacing a vanity, it is not easy to know what the important choices are. A good vanity gives you storage, supports the sink and makes the room look better.
A bathroom vanity is a piece of furniture, usually in the bathroom, that provides storage around the sink (unless you have one of our best pedestal sinks). It also makes your sink look more beautiful and supports the basin. You can get single-sink vanities or double-sink vanities if you need space for two. Below we compare five popular vanities, from a compact 24-inch model to a 48-inch floating double vanity and a mirrored luxury unit, followed by a buying guide.

Bathroom Vanity Buying Guide
- Measure exactly. If the space is too small and your measurements were not exact, the vanity will not fit. If you have plenty of space, consider a double sink. If space is smaller, a single basin vanity is the only option.
- Choose a style. Decide between a freestanding and a floating (wall-mounted) vanity, and look at the style, design and color you prefer.
- Materials and finishes. Solid wood and plywood are the most durable. MDF and laminated chipboard are cheaper but can swell if water gets in, so look for a well-sealed, painted finish. Mirrored and glass vanities suit modern bathrooms.
- Storage. A vanity with drawers and shelves offers a lot of storage, but drawers should be functional and not blocked by the plumbing. Doors are best if you want to hide the pipes.
- What is included. Check whether the faucet, drain and backsplash come with the vanity. Many do not.
What Are the Benefits of the Right Bathroom Vanity?
The most obvious benefit is storage, especially if you buy a unit big enough. It also provides adequate space around the sink, supports the weight of everyday use and keeps the bathroom free of clutter.
Common Problems with Bathroom Vanities
- Sink material. If the sink is not made of toughened glass or solid porcelain, it can chip or break if you drop something on it.
- Plumbing. You will probably need to adjust the vanity for the plumbing, and this is best left to a professional. Poor work can lead to mold and mildew and far more damage than a new vanity.
- Moisture. Wipe the vanity and seal the edges around the sink and the wall to keep water out of the cabinet.
What Do Bathroom Vanities Cost?
Prices range from about $150 for a small vanity to $1,000 or more for premium models. A budget of roughly $300 to $600 buys a nicely made unit for most bathrooms. Before you rush into buying, compare specifications and check the reviews. For the rest of the bathroom, see our bathroom faucet reviews and our lighted vanity mirror reviews.
Before you buy
Measure the space twice before you order, and check what the listing includes: the faucet, drain and backsplash are often extra.
